Why Does Marijuana Make Some People Faint?

Marijuana is a psychoactive drug that can cause dizziness and fainting. This condition, known as cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, occurs when the body is unable to properly process cannabinoids from marijuana use.

While the majority of individuals may consume marijuana without having any problems, fainting has been reported as a side effect. According to some medical professionals, these blackout periods may happen because THC lowers blood pressure in the body. (Originally published on Benzinga.com)

When a joint finds its way into your hands, you’re at a party, laughing it up with pals like you’ve done a thousand times before. There’s nothing unusual about this, except that by smoking with others, you’re going to catch the germs of everyone else in the room, but that’s an other tale for another day. However, in this situation, you take a hit off the joint, pass it to the left, and continue to enjoy the discussion going on around you.

Then, all of a sudden, things begin to become strange.

You may feel as if you’re going to puke at first, and your senses may begin to go crazy. You may even have difficulty regaining your breath and remark something like, “Dang, what was in that weed?” to the person next to you. You even contemplate taking a break for a moment to recover your composure, but before you can go to the restroom, everything goes dark. You’re informed afterwards that after taking that hit of marijuana, you simply passed out.

Unfortunately, although the majority of individuals can consume marijuana without having any problems, fainting is a recognized adverse effect. According to some medical professionals, blackouts may occur because tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the cannabinoid that causes the herb’s stoned effects, widens blood vessels, lowering blood pressure in the body. The heart rate rises as a result, and individuals may lose consciousness as a result.

In certain instances, the eating technique is the only cause of the fainting. A person may not experience this adverse effect after smoking a joint or using a vaporizer, but when they take a drag from a bong, they pass out.

The effects of smoking marijuana are felt faster, and the size of the dose may occasionally be a role. The majority of the time, though, fainting occurs when a person gets up to smoke marijuana. If you’ve had this problem before, it’s a smart idea to remain closer to the ground the next time you light one up.

Although passing out from a marijuana high isn’t always hazardous, falling and striking your head is never a good thing.

Dr. Andrew Mongomery, a general practitioner, told Vice, “Marijuana may induce fairly significant drop of blood pressure, and lead users to faint because not enough blood gets to the brain.” “A decreased blood pressure may cause a feeling of dizziness without passing out, [but] the molecular processes behind this are extremely complicated and little understood.”

There are a few clear indications that it’s going to be light out that a marijuana user has to be aware of. If you start to feel dizzy, short of breath, break out in a sweat, feel nauseated, develop a headache, or have impaired vision after taking a hit, it’s time to sit down and relax for a minute.

However, don’t get too worked up about it; the unpleasant periods will pass as your body adapts to the THC.

There’s always the possibility that a weed-induced fainting episode will just happen once and never happen again. It’s also conceivable that someone who is prone to this response may have difficulty with it every time they consume alcohol. That’s when you should see a doctor, since passing out due to blood pressure fluctuations, whether caused by marijuana or not, may indicate a cardiovascular problem.

It’s worth noting, though, that stopping oneself from passing out while smoking marijuana is as easy as sitting down.
