More than 64,000 cannabis plants seized from illegal outdoor grows in California watersheds

From clandestine indoor grows in the Golden State to illegal cannabis farms in the Sierra Nevada, California’s growing season is the “green gold rush.” In recent years, the illegal outdoor growing of medical and recreational cannabis has become an even bigger issue. In a recent joint-enforcement operation, state and federal law enforcement agencies seized nearly 64,000 plants in five different watersheds.

According to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), more than 64,000 outdoor cannabis plants (about 7 pounds per plant) have been seized from illegal grows in the San Bernardino National Forest and Inyo National Forest in California since May 1, 2017. Inyo National Forest Supervisor, Scott McKee, said that the illegal grows, found in the forest’s remote areas, posed severe environmental risks and impacted critical State and Federal agencies.

Legal sales alone were up by over 68 percent in the first half of 2018, and the state is expected to produce over $1 billion in legal cannabis sales in 2018.
