Family and friends mourn death of teen who inspired families to explore cannabis for seizures

The 16-year-old girl, whose name was not released, suffered a seizure at a public park in Portland, Oregon, according to police. When she collapsed, an off-duty firefighter stepped in to help. The teen had a history of seizures since she was young, and marijuana was her only treatment.

When 16-year-old Zachary Schafer died in a car crash in February of this year, he left behind a legacy that would make him an unlikely hero to many. Zach was a young man who suffered from a rare form of epilepsy, and his parents had been researching medical marijuana as a treatment option for their son. After Zach died, his family decided to open a cannabis dispensary in the town where he lived, in order to make marijuana available to others suffering from seizures. The move was strongly opposed by the community, but the Schafer family moved forward with the dispensary anyway, opening their doors in late May.
