As the stigma surrounding cannabis continues to evaporate, the demand for it is only set to go higher. Now more than ever, medicinal cannabis is on the minds of many newly-legal states and major cities. Even still, many are unaware of the medicinal benefits of cannabis, its active ingredient, CBD, and what ingredients in the cannabis plant can help promote a good night’s sleep.

You may have considered a cannabis component, such as CBD, if you’re one of the millions of individuals who have difficulty sleeping. What Does the Science Say About Marijuana?
Cannabis, often known as marijuana, is gaining popularity due to its potential health advantages, particularly cannabis components. The following are two cannabinoids that have received a lot of attention:

He works as a consultant at Mayo Clinic’s Center for Sleep Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, and is an associate professor of psychiatry and psychology.
However, certain research have shown promise. A tiny one on dronabinol, a human-made form of medicinal THC, is among them. It seems to assist with obstructive sleep apnea, according to preliminary studies. However, according to Kolla, “at this time, we do not advocate the use of cannabis products for the treatment of sleep apnea or other sleep disorders.”
Ryan Vandrey, PhD, a psychiatry and behavioral sciences professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimoe, investigates the effects of cannabis usage on sleep. THC has been shown to help people fall asleep quicker in the short term, according to him. However, “there is a significant gap in our knowledge” on how cannabis impacts long-term sleep quality or whether it may assist individuals with sleep problems.
Michelle Sexton, ND (naturopathic doctor), an associate adjunct professor in the department of anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego, advises patients on how to utilize cannabis to treat various ailments. She claims that those who take THC to relieve pain frequently report getting more sleep. She claims that they aren’t waking up as much.
THC products, according to Sexton, have some real-world advantages. However, “the corpus of literature is very small” when it comes to cannabis studies on sleep.
There’s some evidence that nabilone, a human-made version of cannabis, may assist with sleep issues caused by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). People with PTSD, according to Vandrey, frequently report having less nightmares when they consume cannabis. “A lot of people claim they don’t recall their dreams,” he adds.
To find out whether CBD may assist with sleep, further study is required. People who take it to treat other health problems, such as anxiety, pain, or epilepsy, report their sleep improves, according to Vandrey. But, he adds, we don’t know whether this is due to CBD or because the chemical is beneficial in other ways.
Vandrey adds, “We can attempt to put together a narrative.” “However, at this time, it’s a very fragmentary picture.”
The Consequences of Cannabis Use
The chemicals in cannabis or other substances get used to your brain and body. To get the same results, you’ll need to utilize a larger dosage. Cannabis may not help you sleep as well as it used to, or you may find it difficult to sleep on your own.
“What often occurs is that individuals develop a habit of using cannabis on a regular basis for a long period of time, whether it’s a high THC or high CBD hemp product,” Vandrey adds. “Then they can’t sleep for a night if they don’t have it.”
Although it’s unlikely that you’ll overdose on THC or CBD, there are a few factors to consider:
- Withdrawal. When you attempt to stop using cannabis after a long period of time, you may have sleep difficulties. Insomnia and the recurrence of vivid dreams or nightmares, according to Vandrey, are examples of this.
- Dizziness or a loss of balance. Whether you have to wake up in the middle of the night to pee, Sexton recommends giving yourself a minute to check if you’re feeling steady. Make sure you utilize your walking assistance if you have one.
- It’s difficult to think clearly. Heavy cannabis usage has been related to memory, learning, and attention issues.
- Problems with your health. Any chemical that you smoke may harm your lungs, heart, or blood vessels.
- Misuse of a substance. Cannabis has a lower addiction potential than alcohol or opiates. People who use cannabis on a regular basis, on the other hand, may develop a cannabis use disorder. If you want to quit but can’t, tell your doctor. They’ll assist you in quitting.
If you’re pregnant or nursing, avoid using cannabis products. Your infant may be harmed by the medication.
Numerous studies have been published over the years that examine the effects of cannabis on sleep.
